THC JD vs Delta 9

The cannabis plant has over 100 cannabinoids, of which, approximately 20 are THC cannabinoids. Due to their effects, all forms of THC are classified as psychoactive compounds.

For some, we have a lot of information, while for others, there is limited data available. For instance, Delta 9 is one of the most studied and popular forms of THC. At the same time, there are many aspects that still need to be researched when it comes to the newly discovered THC JD.

What is Delta-9 THC?

Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol is the most abundant form of THC. Some might even say it’s the primary psychoactive component of the cannabis plant or to the Cannabis Sativa plant, to be more exact. The Delta-9 compound can be mostly found in the leaves and flowers. As you may have guessed, it’s usually Delta-9 that makes you high when consuming cannabis.

There are various ways to consume Delta-9 THC. The most popular is smoking pre-rolls made with the help of a THC infusion machine. Another inhaling method is to vape Delta-9 THC for rapid absorption. If you feel like it, you can also make edibles and beverages with delta-9 or use topical products containing THC.

When consumed, Delta-9 binds with specific sites of the nervous system. The psychoactive effects of Delta-9 THC are a result of the compound activating the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Delta-9 is mainly used for recreational purposes, as it produces a strong high. Regarding the medical use of THC, currently only some synthetic forms of THC, like nabilone and dronabinol, are approved by the FDA. They are specifically utilized for reducing nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

What is THC JD?

Tetrahydrocannabioctyl or THC JD in short, is a fairly new cannabis product, discovered in 2020. Just like Delta-9 THC, it is a naturally occurring cannabinoid, but it is extracted with isomerization, typically from CBD isolate. During the extraction, CO2 or solvent extractions must be utilized.

One of the similarities between Delta-9 THC and THC JD is that they are both found in the Cannabis Sativa L. species. Yet, THC JD is particularly found in specific hemp varieties.

Since its discovery, THC JD has gained attention among cannabis enthusiasts because of its enhanced potency and effects.

Structure and Presence in The Cannabis Plant

THC JD is considered Delta-9 homologue. The difference between the two is that Delta-9 has a shorter carbon side chain. More specifically, the THC JD compound has an 8-carbon side chain, which is three carbons longer than its counterpart.

The side chain length significantly influences the compound's ability to attach to the body’s cannabinoid receptors. Since THC JD has a longer side chain, it can produce a stronger high than Delta-9.

Another difference between THC JD and Delta 9 is their presence in the cannabis plant. While Delta-9 is considered to be the most abundant THC form available in the cannabis plant, THC JD can be found only in trace amounts.

Effects: Comparing the High

The unique chemical structure of THC JD, makes it more potent than Delta-9 THC. Although the high from the two cannabis compounds hasn’t been compared scientifically, the assumptions are that THC JD has 10 times more powerful psychoactive effects.

Regarding the other effects, some of the commonly reported ones of Delta-9 are:

  • Relaxation

  • Euphoria

  • Increased appetite

  • Altered perception

  • Increased happiness

  • Anxiety reduction

There might also be undesired effects of Delta-9 consumption, such as panic attacks, delusions, hallucinations and difficulty focusing. The effects of Delta-9 may last up to 12 hours, depending on the consumption method.

THC JD shares the same effects as Delta-9. Some of the expected effects include a feeling of happiness, relaxation, alteration of perception, and increased appetite. Further scientific research is needed to fully understand the potential therapeutic effects of THC JD. The current reports show that the THC JD effects might last between two and four hours.

Potential Therapeutic Benefits

Delta-9 THC has been used for years for medical uses, but its legality varies from one state to another. Some therapeutic benefits of Delta-9 may be pain relief, nausea and anxiety reduction, reducing insomnia, help with muscle spasticity, etc.

On the other hand, THC JD is believed to have similar therapeutic benefits to Delta-9. Some of the commonly listed benefits, that need to be yet proven, are anxiety reduction, pain relief, and inflammation and swelling reduction.

Availability and Consumption Methods

There is a huge difference between THC JD and Delta 9 in their availability and consumption methods.

Delta-9 can be inhaled, ingested, or applied to the skin. Besides using it as a topical, you can smoke or vape Delta-9 THC. Cannabis enthusiasts also like to make edibles and beverages with THC, such as gummies, candy, and taffy. In addition, topical application of Delta-9 is becoming increasingly popular.

Regarding THC JD products, the most common consumption methods are vape pens and cartridges. If you are lucky, you can find gummies, tinctures, and distillates with THC JD, but they are not as spread on the market as delta-9.

Conclusion

So what have we learned from our THC JD vs Delta 9 guide? Both are naturally occurring cannabinoids, but Delta-9 is significantly more present in the cannabis plant. The two cannabis compounds have different chemical structures, with THC JD having a side chain with three carbons more, making it more potent. However, since Delta-9 is more studied than THC JD, its effects are more familiar and there are more versatile products available with Delta-9.
